This pistol had a very simple magazine disconnector built into the mainspring housing. I removed it from my own pistol as I believe it to be superfluous. It now works perfectly without said mag disconnector. No, I don't need it as a "safety." It is a range toy, nothing more. It is already a Series 80 design and I am somewhat experienced with 1911 pistols, so I find it quite safe without this moderately annoying feature.
