For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: It belonged to Paul Hope, a fellow writer who was the the volunteer secretary of the Texas Outdoor Writers' Association until ill health forced him to quit. The health problems turned out to be cancer and he passed away. That was probably 20 years ago, now. He and I did a lot of shooting together for articles we were doing to get two people's perspectives on guns and to help out with photography. The only .45-70 rifle I ever fired was his - a Marlin remake of an old model if I remember correctly. All I absolutely remember about it is that it had a curved metal butt plate that I nicknamed "scimitar". I only shot it once. We also often made the trek from Austin to Amarillo together for an annual pheasant hunt with other writers on opening weekend. He was a great guy and a lot of fun to be around. So many of the guys I looked forward to seeing every year at the Texas writers' meeting passed on that I finally had to quit going. It became too miserable an experience. I imagine that the P-38 ended up with Paul's son. I should check with him to see if he still has it and would maybe consider parting with it... That would put another sentimental pistol in my safe. |
