Cool. There is still a German sub (same one?) at the one of the Chicago museums --the Field Museum? I want to visit sometime. I think I enjoyed going on that American sub more as a full grown adult than I might have as a kid, even. I know I embarrassed my late-teenage son, sitting there making up a scene from countless WWII sub movies and talking it out loud...no other people around but us, but still, teenagers, they embarrass easily. | ||||||

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: I got to do the same thing in Chicago as a kid back in the 1950s. The German sub U505 was captured during the war and put on display as part of a museum near downtown on the lake shore. They had a small theater where you watched the capture take place and then the process of getting it to where it was displayed. You went in an entrance at one end, walked through and then walked out an exit at the other end of the boat. We even got to look through the infamous periscope. It was an imagination-supercharging experience for a kid interested in all things WWII! But, heck, WWII had only been over for a few years then and Korea was flaring up. |
