There's no question in my mind that the IDF is a tough, competent organization. The only laxity I was looking at, and I think more and more that it's just different rather than lax, was the way they seemed to sling their rifles, in particular when off duty.
Harvey G recommended a documentary to me, Beneath the Helmet, about the transformation of diverse Israeli high school graduates into an airborne unit. While they did seem to favor a loose two-point sling, I didn't think it was quite that loose or that the rifles were carried so casually down their backs. Then again, it could be the difference between on-duty and off-duty. In any event, I think I've beaten this question to death and am happy to drop it. Stu |
