I have a Rock-Ola M1 Carbine that is vintage WWII. It had been through the mill when I got it. The barrel was shot out and it had the idiotic "BLUE SKY IMPORTS, Arlington VA" stamp on the barrel.
That hacked me off, but it was a Rock-Ola. When I tried shooting it, it short cycled and when I took it to the gunsmith, he said the rifling in the barrel was about gone and the throat was well below spec. Said I needed a new barrel. Fast forward a few years, I've hired a high school football buddy who's into the M1 Garand and Carbines. He has the armorer's wrench to change out a barrel. On his own he sourced out and purchased a vintage non-import marked Rock-Ola barrel. I bought it off him and he installed it. Only problem is, it's blued and the gun is semi-parked. It doesn't look quite right. So, at a local show, I run into James River Armory. These guys specialize in M1 Garand and M1 Carbine re-furbishing. They have some of their guns on display with before and after pictures. They look beautiful and they are restored to their proper provenance. So, seeing my poor mismatched Carbine that might have some other parts issues, I bring it back to them at the show to look it over. They point out 3 other parts that need replacing for function to include the stock. Apparently, mine was either a Korean or Philippine lend-lease gun. The stock was rotten in 5 spots inside the rifle that I hadn't seen. They say they can re-parkerize the gun, swap out the bad parts, and replace the stock for $369. I normally don't do restorations like this, but this was simply too good a deal to pass up. They replaced the bad parts and included them when the gun shipped back including the stock. Very happy with their work. I don't have any pictures of it up on the forum. Will have to correct that. My friend thinks I destroyed the collector value and maybe I did, but the gun was non-functional with an ugly import mark. Now it's nice and pretty. The fiance likes it as she can shoulder it and shoot it without hurting her rotator cuff. She's thinking about claiming it. I might not discourage this. |
