Back when I acquired those followers the only way to get an 8-round magazine for a .45ACP 1911 was to buy a kit that included either a Devel or Chip McCormick Shooting Star follower. I shot them for as long as I shot action pistol competition and I don't recall them being any trouble. The load I used was a 200-grain semi wadcutter lead bullet in front of 5.7 grains of Winchester 231 and a Winchester Large Pistol primer. Cartridge overall length was 1.260". I guess either this was an agreeable load for the followers and springs, or the gunsmithing done to the two pistols I shot made a difference, or I was just lucky...
Now I use the 8-round Wilson ETMs in my .45ACP 1911s and they have been no trouble so far with the exception of one split plastic follower that Wilson replaced. |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: I wouldn't touch the two on the right. Not even for practice use. I have a lot of experience with Devel followers. They completely suck. Image below from Allan Tarvid - Image Title: photos Image Info: Here are three types of followers for 8-round 1911 magazines. A dished-out polymer follower in a new Wilson ETM magazine on the left, a flat Devel follower in the middle and a very similar Shooting Star follower on the right. Larger image available!
