Robert and all,
Some of you know this, but we never know who is reading, eh? So--from the "For-what-it's-worth" department, .38 Special +P ammo, while a good idea if your .38 Special revolvers will take it, is not much more powerful than regular .38 Special ammunition. Oftentimes in fact it is barely any different. I've proven this on my own chronograph many times over the years. All "+P" means is increased pressure, but not necessarily more power. Some people think the "P" stands for power but it doesn't. Sometimes the velocities are higher with standard ammo because many things go into velocity, to include bullet weight, poweder charge weight, jacket material or lack of jacket, and barrel length. Even individual barrels can be "fast" or "slow" among the same make and model of gun. At the end of the day, sure, use +P if your .38 is rated for it, but if you want power out of your revolver, use a .357 Magnum and learn to handle it. the difference between .38 Special, even +P--and .357 Magnum ammo, is significant, normally several hundred feet per second, while the difference between standard .38 Special and .38 Special +P is measure in several tens of feet per second. |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Great looking "snubby", will it take +P Image below from TJ Parmele - Image Title: photos Image Info: Here is a S&W Model 10-7. This came to me missing a barrel but setup for a 2 inch barrel with the ejector rod. I had a 2 inch barrel sitting around so I decided to have the local smith attach it. Here it is in the raw now.
