Section 8: Handguns Subject: Chief’s Special Msg# 1141116

Keep in mind that S&W did not assign model numbers until 1957. The first ones were simply called Chiefs Specials when first announced in 1950, and the earliest ones had some leftover features of the old I-frame .38S&Ws such as a shorter grip frame (later grips will not interchange) and a shorter trigger guard. All of these were steel, however. Only the Airweights had aluminum frames.
Come 1957 the steel frame guns became the Model 36, the Airweights became the Model 37. Of course other versions of the original "Chief's" were developed such as the Model 38 Bodyguard Airweight with a shrouded hammer, the Model 40 Centennial with the hammer completely covered by the frame (the so-called "concealed hammer" model) making it DAO, the Model 42 Centennial Airweight, etc. |
