SAC was the "keeper of the bombs", very serious, no grab ass, base restricted to assigned personnel only, at a minimum 25% of all bombers were in the air loaded with nuclear weapons with another 25% on the ramp, engines running, all "bombed up" and ready to be airborne in 15 minutes or less. We had constant alerts and spot inspections by teams of SAC officers on a random basis. The alerts ran for 2-3 days, if you were off base in town you had to get back within 30 minutes or less. The last thing affected married guys with family in base housing, SAC bases were considered to be the first thing the Soviets would target and, most likely be history within an hour or so of the balloon going up, when the ICBM's were added in the time was reduced to 30 minutes or less! | ||||||

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: The Air Force was a hoot until I got into a SAC outfit then things got real "real" in a hurry! How so? Stricter? More professional? More physical? How so? Harvey |
