These pistols are very ammo-specific. Mine, in .357, must use the hottest ammo and in the heaviest weights--well. 158gr, not 180s. Magnum Research's website gives a couple of specific recommendations, so I've bought those. With the recommended ammo, mine runs perfectly. For fun, I tried some lighter 125s, and it wouldn't run right. I just had to see for myself.  Now I stick to the recommended loads. I've yet to handload for this one, but if I do, I'll try to load some equivalent handloads.
