I'm probably not in the majority, especially among the more senior group who lived through what I like to call the Weatherby era--which definitely influenced other gun companies and caused them to offer fancy finishes and rifles like the 700 BDL.
I really like oil-finished stocks. As you say, not a major catastrophe if you dinged one, but I really like the looks anyway. I think I like them because I came to commercial rifles through my original love for military rifles, and the oil-finished stock is very common on a military rifle. I've refinished several rifle stocks, military and commercial, and never shellac'd them up like a BDL or a Weatherby Mark V, but with a nice, hand-rubbed oil finish. |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Had on in 30-06 back in the late 70's, quality rifle, not as fancy as the BDL but shot the same and, if you dinged or scratched the stock it wasn't a major catastrophe!
