Damascus is a form of steel where many layers of different steel are forge welded together in different layers and that gives the neat patterns you see.  Gold Damascene is best explained in this video:

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Is there a distinction between Damascene and inlays?  I always thought that Damascene was more a style of decoration than a process but I never really looked it up. Stu
