I was not used much in WWII but saw a lot of use in Malaysia in the 1950s because it was really handy in the bush. Most soldiers liked it, but it had a nagging reputation for having a wandering zero. As Britain was moving on past bolt actions to semi-auto battle rifles like the rest of the world, it was an easy decision to end manufacture of the No.5.
I had one--it was my first Lee-Enfield. It shot very well, but it didn't have its original stock. A local gunsmith had restocked it. I didn't know any better at the time so I bought it. That was up in NorCal. You might remember it, as I had it out to the Vandenberg range and possibly the Lompoc range. I know you were with me at the Vandenberg range when I had it out. I ended up selling it here in Ohio as it was something of a Frankengun. |
