No, it was more of a Mauser 98 action--but then, so was the 1903. After WWI, Remington's first commercial bolt action was the Model 30, which was just a remodeled US Model 1917. Winchester's only foray into "commercial" bolt actions had been the custom M1903s they were building for the US Army rifle team. With Remington's success, Winchester introduced the Model 54. While it had some disliked features, it sold well until the Depression. The model 70 of course replaced in, and fixed some of the complaints users had about the Model 54. Still, it was a fine rifle in its own right. | ||||||
