That's a nice rifle setup you have with the M1A. If it's anything like mine, I bet it shoots pretty well.
Yeah, they came to me like that, except I took the bolt from the T-43 Scout rifle and popped it into the Mosin. I like the curved bolt handle I found many years ago. It makes it easier for the bolt to cycle. I also popped the cartridge holder on there since I have never mastered the Mosin Stripper clips. The FN Mauser is a nicer conversion and a nicer rifle. It's also in a very serviceable caliber that's easy to find with .30-06. The T-53s have risen in price over the years. I found that rotted out one on a forum on "The High Road" for $35 plus shipping. Yeah, that stock was literally distintegrating in my hands when I got it. It taught me a few different things about restoration. Namely, don't do THAT kind of restoration again. I've played around with the Scout Concept a bit as well when I had an M1A Scout rifle. This was a handy Scout, although heavier than I would have wanted. However, it being semi-auto with the extra weight and muzzle brake, felt recoil was not bad at all. Another one I went after was building a Ruger American bolt gun in a Scout Rifle Configuration. This one was chambered in 6.5 Grendel. This one took AR-15 magazines and I found the 10 round 6.5 Grendel magazines worked well. It cycled ok, but it was more of a bargain rifle built by Ruger. Ammo wasn't hard to come by, but it isn't something found at Wal-Mart either. When I found a good deal, I'd get as much as they generally had. I think this was called a Pseudo Scout due to the length of the action and the cartridge involved.
THe rifle below is my latest "transcend the Scout" concept for a general rifle. It's a Ruger "Small Frame Autoloading Rifle" is a scaled down AR-10 to fit AR-15 dimensions.Chamberd in .308 Winchester, it definitely works.
This has a Vortex Strike Eagle LPVO of 2-6X, and a Dead Air Silencer named the Wolverine which is meant for an AK, but it works with the .308 rifle. The rifle weighs as much as a kitted out AR-15 and IMHO surpasses the Scout concept due to a larger mag capacity (if so desired) and the LPVO opic more or less does a better job than a Scout Scope for me. It weighs about asuch as an AR-15 with doodads attached. |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: The two milsurp sporters made to look like hunting rifles look nice--especially the FN. They came to you like that? The Chinese T53 was typical in that the stocks were made from an odd wood found in Manchuria called "Chu." The same wood is used for Popsicle sticks, I think. It is crap, indeed. I had a T53 a couple decades or more ago. They were the Chinese equivalent of the Soviet M44. I actually ran across a couple of minty (surprise! ) T53s recently and I'm thinking of buying one. Not sure why. By the way, I still like the scout scope concept, although I know I'm in the minority here. I have a forward-mounted scope on my M1A.
