You're my hero, shooting as much as you still do.
Keeping track is what made me switch from the lightweight .45ACP Government Model to Harvey's and my lightweight 9mm Commander as a carry gun. The guns have the same frame and grips so they feel close enough to the same in my hand that there was no mental break-in or update time required. The reason for the swap was tied to the 9mm being faster for me to shoot follow-up shots, whether on a single target or multiple targets while still or moving. I don't have the hand strength I used to have and I can better feel the difference in the two calibers' recoil. The end result is that I can shoot within a hair of as good as I could before but I had to step down to a nine to do it. We've now got an indoor range 10 minutes away--yet I feel like I shouldn't spend the money to shoot there when I have a club membership 25-30 minutes away that I'm already paying for. Yeah, no real logic there. Once again, I am fortunate. The clubs I shoot at are private members only and run by volunteers. We have lots of young guys in their 50s and 60s shoving us old farts out of the way so we don't hold things up. I forgot to mention there is also a commercial range 10 minutes away but it's a shotgun range and I almost never shoot there. I understand your reluctance to pay to shoot when you already have a membership at a club not much farther away and can shoot there with no hourly rate. I finally limited my memberships to the indoor range and the closest shotgun range. The commercial indoor ranges I've used charged one price for non-members and a discounted price for members and while their hourly shooting rates were pretty high (and had a 1-hour minimum), I usually showed up with all my magazines/speed loaders loaded and did all my shooting in 30 minutes or less so that was never much of a factor. I didn't buy a membership unless I shot there often enough for the discounted hourly rate to pay for the membership over a year's shooting. I also like to shoot when I want to and the weather doesn't always support that which makes me appreciate an indoor range even more. |
