To me, "Stereotyping" has been made another liberal buzz word used much more broadly than it should. Certainly, in what I consider it's original sense, dealing with people based upon perceived group characteristics - religion, race, profession, etc - is dumb. I think that joking about such things is a source of much of our humor, though, and - if done in a friendly, not mean-spirited, way - is innocuous.
Still, it also has to be funny to qualify. Rereading the "In Memorial" segments this week reminded me of the kidding back and forth with Mike Davies about Americans, Englishmen and Canadians. The woke would indeed consider that stereotyping, but to us all - including Mike, who gave as good as he got - it was just fun. Are there "third rail" issues there which we can stumble over? Sure, we always have to be vigilant about cutting too close to the bone but that's what so much humor is in my opinion. Stu |

Stereotyping is like cliches -- there's some truth in there, but too broad of a stroke is counter productive, IMO. Harvey |
