I've never attended a benchrest competition, but I'm pretty sure that the size of the group, rather than group placement is the criteria for measuring success. You can find the International Benchrest Shooters rulebook here.
The paragraph which discusses scoring reads as follows: "All scoring shall be by group size from center to center of the widest shots, using the Sweany Rule or equivalent. The following procedure has proven successful.

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Sorry, I couldn't resist that... Isn't there a form of bench rest type of competition where they don't care whether you hit the aiming point or not, they just measure the size of the group? That always seemed counterproductive to me and worthy of at least a small amount of ridicule... |
