Probably the ability to use a convenient place, and have quicker turnover since they would only have 27.7yards for the troops to walk to change targets instead of 100 yards HGW |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: I never quite understood shooting rifles at barely over 25 yards, though the 1000 inch target was much used across the entire military. When I was in basic we fired at 100 yards if memory serves. Of course by then they were using an early form of .22LR insert in the M16, with poor reliability. They continued to use that during my enlistment, and I fired all my Air Force Qualifications with the .22 insert, and we continued to have reliability problems. Fortunately for us we did not use the inserts for our Security Police qualifications, which we always fired on the same day, using standard 5.56 Ball. Surprisingly, the rifles were reliable firing that ammo. 
I can relate to the Carbines you used. When I went to the Federal Correctional Academy we qualified with Carbines, and they were most sincerely beat. I took it in stride because I was a fair shooter by that time, and just corrected malfs on the go--I shot Expert* there, one of three of a class of fifty or so. But the majority weren't shooters, and every malf would see hands shoot in the air waiting for a range officer to solve the problem for the student. * That also included shooting with the Smith Model 65 revolver |
