Yep, it was a pleasure knowing him. I've lost both of my WWII gym buddies in the past year. The other was a Marine who landed at the retaking of Guam. Babe was the only Marine I've known to have carried a Reising subgun -- not his TOE weapon, but one that was assigned to him when he was tasked with guarding prisoners. He was another hero of mine, although I ragged on him frequently by reminding him that I outranked him (he had been a Pfc, and I had been a corporal.) A third member of our little USMC group gave Babe and I a lot of static, because he had been a sergeant during the Korean War. But we got our digs in since he had been a Mess Sergeant rather than "a real Marine".
