Would you call the ODI a cheapie copy of the Seecamp conversion? Or doe you think you justgot a bad one (or one that had been "gunsmithed")?
You might recall I had several opportunities to buy a Seecamp--the same gun, several times at OGCA with the last few years. The price was probably reasonable. I don't recall what it was but I do know I thought it fair at the time. The practical and the shooter in me won out over the collector in me, so I've never had the opportunity. Did you ever have a Colt Double Beagle? I seem to recall you tried one but I forget now. When I was working at a gun shop here in the early 90s we had a regular indoor range user who owned one and he loved it--his was reliable and, I presume, accurate enough to engender his happiness. Only happy owner I've ever discussed a DE with, however. How close was the DE to the Seecamp Conv.? |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: I had a Viking for a while. I bought it on line from Randy Bessler. I was really excited about Seecamp conversions at the time, and was looking forward to another iteration of that system. What a disappointment -- when I racked the slide the first time, the hammer followed the slide when it went into battery. Thankfully, I was just dry firing it. I ended up sending it to my favorite gunsmith who fixed that problem, but the pistol was never very accurate, and the trigger pull couldn't be improved, so I sold it to a Seecamp collector, along with another Seecamp conversion (Colt Commander in .38 Super), and that ended my Seecamp collecting. Image below from Mark Freburg - Image Title: photos Image Info: The ODI Viking was an early 1911-based double action .45 auto, which was a commercial take-off of the aftermarket Seecamp Conversion. At the time the stainless stleel construction was also radical for a semi-auto. This photo is from a magazine review circa 1983. MSRP at the time was $579. |
