My only guess is simplicity and cost savings. There are plenty of grips available that give you the square-butt shape and feel even on a round-butt revolver - and were even when they made both butt styles. The round-butt frame is adaptable to many in-between handle shapes as well.

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Apparently, I have no idea why else they switched to all round butt configuration. Perhaps Stu has an idea. He has some experience with both Smith & Wesson and with money.
