The jackrabbits were easy to find at Amarillo AFB. There was lots of open space along the road between the barracks and the flightline and the grass/weeds were cut short for security purposes. There was a line of utility poles that followed the road and they were the only objects tall enough to cast a shadow. During the heat of the day every pole would have a jackrabbit sitting up next to it in the shade of the pole.
We were never allowed to shoot them, although a rumor circulated that one of the sentries guarding the nuclear-armed bombers on the alert pad got in trouble for shooting at them on a boring afternoon. |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Back in 1960 when I was stationed at Laughlin AFB in Del Rio, TX they would check 97 "trench guns" out to us on weekends to clear out the jackrabbits in an effort to keep them off of the runways. We would load them up with BB and often fill a pick-up with jackrabbits, you could hold the trigger back and they would fire as fast as you could pump them. We did this for months until one Saturday when we went to evening chow and they were serving fried RABBIT, there was no way in hell the mess cooks could convince us that it wasn't the jackrabbits we shot that morning!
