We got C's once a month, dated 1943, 1944, the mess hall gave us cases of them which we promptly took across the river to Mexico and traded them for whatever??? Ah, those were the days | ||||||

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: We did this for months until one Saturday when we went to evening chow and they were serving fried RABBIT, there was no way in hell the mess cooks could convince us that it wasn't the jackrabbits we shot that morning! Probably happened in September, as the US Budget's Fiscal Year ended 30 September. We got rabbit a couple of times during my service, always in September. Evidently the Government stored frozen rabbit for emergency use (and cheese wheels, too), and trying to stay within budget, the military was the recipient of this largess. That and a lot of stews made from C-Rats (probably beyond their "sell by dates".) Harvey |
