As far as I know, the Distant Early Warning Line (DEW Line) was a string of radar stations stretching from Alaska and the Aleutian Islands through northern Canada to Greenland and Iceland. I don't know if they were manned by USAF personnel. If they were, I'm glad I never made anyone angry enough to send me to one of them.
As for KP, we didn't have to do it on the main base but until I got my second stripe I had to do it at the SAC alert shack. Apparently, they wanted only SAC people there. The "alert shack" was a very nice brick building where the crews of the four alert bombers stayed while on alert. It had its own bedrooms, bathrooms, day room and kitchen, and we used to fight for the chance to do KP there because they served the best food on the base, maybe in the county. |
