The model 99 was really popular in the 50s.  Many were scoped with a Stith or Weaver scope.  The 99 had a good buckhorn iron sight but I never liked any Buckhorn sight. 

I remember my first Antelope hunt in Wyoming with my brother in-law.  We hooked up with a local rancher who befriended us.  He fed us, let us sleep in his bunk house and took us hunting in his pickup.  The first morning we met at the truck.  He had a Model 99 in his hand that was the worst, beat up 99 I had ever seen.  He laid his 99 in the back of the pick-up and we got in the cab with our rifles.  I couldn't believe he just laid in on the bed with no protection.  I asked him about his 99 and he said it was a 250/3000 and he had killed a bunch of Antelope and deer with it.  We drove around the hills and gullies with the 99 bouncing around and sliding back and forth in the back of the truck.  

I figured that was one tough rifle to kill antelope and deer after the way he treated it.
