I don't have data in front of me, so we aren't really having an intelligent discussion here----but I'm just thinking that given the not insignificant number of handgun hunters, and archers as well as you point out, it is not an insurmountable task to kill a deer with less than the oft-accepted 1000ft/lbs of energy.
I think we both know energy figures are not the be-all and end-all when it comes to killing power. I happen to have a friend who has, for reasons we don't need to discuss, killed several deer with a .22 rifle, one shot and dead. Is a .22LR a good deer cartridge? No, and I don't think we would choose it, but the fact remains that skill and circumstance outweighs anyone's "energy figures." |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: My basic point remains: So is archery hunting – I didn't do either. With enough expertise and restraint, either will take down a deer but you do have to be good. People do it and some do it successfully but it is still below the frequently quoted base energy for ethical deer hunting. I'm pretty sure that one of the places I've seen the 1000 ft-lb figure used was in Michigan Department of Natural Resources literature. Stu |
