My grandson was active '16-'20 and I remember him talking about modified M-14's set up with a high power scope, maybe 12-18 power, used by platoons for sniper work out to 1,000 yards? Said they were popular in Afghanistan, the Taliban or whoever would set up far enough from a trail to be out of effective range of the M-4 and proceed to drop mortars on the grunts. The joke was on them when the unit sharpshooter got to work with the M-14, the 168 grain Match King rounds were deadly as attested to by a number of Taliban funerals! | ||||||

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Careful with the M14 jokes, Marine. We may have to nuke you 'til you glow, as we used to say in the Air Force. Bring it on Birdmen! Well, USMC was probably the last service to use the M14 as standard issue, and entered Vietnam in 1965 equipped with them. However, today, the US Army is the only combat service that still uses the M14 as standard issue to one unit, the 3rd Infantry Regiment. They are the unit that does the guarding of the Unknowns in Arlington, and many other ceremonial activities. The M14 is also used by the other services for ceremonial units, and we know of all the DMR usage by the Marines and Army. Harvey |
