For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: I never understood the whininess that came out of the Pentagon about the M14 being to difficult to fire on full auto. I have fired a BAR on full auto, and I didn't find the .30-06 too difficult to handle that way. Firing a 19+ pound BAR with a hinged butt stock, bipod, flash hider and fire-rate-control buffer mechanism in the butt stock is quite different than firing an M14 at about half the weight. (Take off the bipod and the hinged butt stock will get you down to a svelte 15-16 pound BAR.) The rates of fire in a BAR are about 350 or 550 rounds per minute vs the M14s 700 rpms in a 9 pound or so package, and even though the calibers used in the 2 are different, they are using a similar size bullet at a similar velocity. All that weight and slower rate of fire will likely have felt (and real) recoil more controllable in the BAR. Having fired both, that's just my opinion. Harvey |
