Actually, the .357 with the right ammo was considered the best option back in the 80s, but lost out when semiautomatics took over--though nothing still beats it.

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: I wonder why they didn't just carry 1911's in 45 ACP from day one?  Sure beats any 38 Special or 357 Magnum as a fight stopper.
