Most military "gun workers" are just armorers but there are some true gunsmiths in today's military. For example the Marine Corps is well-known for building their own precision firearms.
I don't know about a lot of civilian gunsmith training these days. You still see ads in magazines, but I suspect many "gunsmiths" are self-trained, which may not be the best thing. The Colorado School of Trades is alive and well and still offers gunsmith training and more. |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: I remember seeing adds in the gun mags in years gone by for the Colorado School of Gunsmithing, are they still in business? Most of the "smiths" I knew in my youth started out as tool & die makers before switching to gunsmithing. Today tools and dies are made using CAD/CAM so I suspect the old tool makers are a dying breed? I wonder where the military gets it's armorers, are they trained as gunsmiths or does the military just buy precision rifles "off the rack"? |
