Section 8: Handguns Subject: Not a Serial Number Msg# 1219254

With Ruger I don't think there is any excuse, as to this day Ruger still puts the serial number in the same place. Actually, there is really no excuse with an S&W either, as those numbers have been in the same place for a long time, too. About the only excuse that comes to mind is complete unawareness of LE property marks and just jumping on the first number noticed--as you said, the path of least resistance. But LE numbers are usually clearly just that, eh? | ||||||

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: You mentioned elsewhere where an FFL mixed up a serial number with a production number. I ran across something similar on Gun Broker that I bet has caused similar problems. You would think that gun shops would know where the serial number is on most firearms, especially brands like S&W, Colt and Ruger. Plus, they have to log firearms in and out of their Bound Books, right? I think in the case of my M36, someone in the shop was just too lazy to remove the stocks, so that person took the path of least resistance and jotted down the production number in the Book. But you're right about confusing unit markings with serial numbers if that's all that is showing externally. Harvey |
