That's what I thought.  I don't know exactly what sort of plastic it was--it felt more like plastic than a hard polymer, so I simply replaced it.  Took some fitting, but seemed worthwhile.

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: A plastic barrel bushing? That doesn't sound good. Nice old photo.
