Darryl, you know this already (we discussed it all seven years ago when you posted this picture) but for those who just stumbled across the picture and description: A shotshell's nominal length is defined by the length of the chamber it is designed to fit in after the shot has been fired and the crimp opened up. Therefore, a loaded shotshell will always be shorter than its nominal length. If that weren't the case - if a loaded shotshell were indeed as long as the chamber - the crimp couldn't open all the way and the shot would be restricted coming out of the shell, leading to shot deformation, tearing of the hull and extreme chamber pressure peaks!
