I talked to an engraver, Brian Powley, a couple OGCA shows when we had a special engraver's display--about 15-20 came and showed their wares. He called the type I like, which he on display, "American." I need to get a book. I have seen the type I specifically like best called "banknote," but which might be a subset of American engraving. Lots of florals with some deep shading, but I wouldn't get full coverage. I wouldn't get any game scenes either. Just the banknote style with perhaps my name or initials, or some meaningful identifier like that.
A real quickie Google search showed this as something like what I see as banknote style. Perhsps Elmer has some comments on this: |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Very true, Mark, about the Damascus slides. I have less of a problem with engraving because it can be designed to enhance the lines of the gun, unlike Damascus which is just out there on its own! Moderate and tasteful engraving doesn't put me off at all. What does is the Italian school of engraving which covers every inch of steel with pictures of game and naked ladies. Stu |
