For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Israeli women, TTBOMK, still face conscription for 24 months of active service, and they represent about 40% of active duty soldiers in the IDF. Because of the larger families among the ultra-religious in Israel that include daughters, more of these young women are avoiding conscription on the basis of religious objections these days. I base this on some small clues I've seen in more recent times, with Israeli women more and more appearing as fashion models and Hollywood actors, something seen less often in decades past. It may mean nothing, I don't know. Chances are most of those models and actresses already put in their active duty time. Gal Gadot, the new Wonder Woman in film, was in the IDF for her active duty at 18, right after she won a Miss Israel beauty pageant. I'm sure there are deferments and delayed entries, but most young Israeli women will be conscripted. (Same for Israeli men, although, IIRC, they have to serve 3 years. Women in the IDF still handle a lot of the non-combat duties, although some do serve in line units. The Caracal Battalion is an infantry unit that is about 2/3 women, and there are several other similar units. These units are more like border patrol than combat infantry. And there are women in the tank units and Intelligence units. However, women do not serve in front line infantry brigades in time of war from what I gather. Harvey |
