Apparently this was an indication it was exempt from German government confiscation, as far as I am finding.  This apparently didn't have anything to do with the treaty requirements after the war ended.

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Far out!  That is extra special.  So if I understand this right in my fading old brain, after the war the Gemran police agencies added this marking to their pistols to indicate that they were exempt from confiscation--from the allies? This pistol has been around so long now, one has to wonder where else it has been all these years.
