I think the shorter length of pull made sense for an army that spends a good portion of the year in heavy winter outwear.

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: I've always felt that the 16.5" barrel should have been the standard length for the SKS. But Simonov must have felt the 20" barrel was short enough compared to the Moisant Nagant. BTW, the SU16 probably has a longer length of pull than the SKS. Harvey
