Hi Mark,
Most heavy recoiling rifles with wood stocks have two cross bolts. One behind the recoil lug and one just behind the magazine cut out. They were reinforcements to prevent the stock from splitting or breaking out. It also helps eliminating any setback in the wood that is in contact with the recoil lug. There is a lot of stress on a stock recoil lug area. Many custom stocks for really heavy recoiling cartridges have a auxiliary recoil lug in the barrel channel. The aux lug can be welded to the barrel, mounted in a dovetail cut into the bottom of the barrel, or some have the aux recoil lug incorporated into a barrel band express sight base. You have probably seen a cross bolt behind the recoil lug on German 98 Mausers. Frank |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: I noticed the position of the cross bolt. Are they trying to keep the wrist from cracking under recoil stress? I've never seen that before. I agree on all your recommendations, and I like the American version much better. |
