There are a few problems with the butterknife bolt handle for me. I really deslike the layout of a Manlicher Schoenauer. Based on usage for quick shots on dangerous game.
The part of your quote I put in bold emphasizes the difference between you and I, Frank. You are a hunter and I'm a target shooter. You make excellent points and I have no arguments with any of them, in fact I respect your comments greatly. I know when I'm in a different group and I know better than to try and dissuade another group where I have no practical knowledge. We all have our specialties, and really, I wouldn't claim to be a specialist in any rifle category, though I'm certainly better versed in some other than hunting! |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: There are a few problems with the butterknife bolt handle for me. I really deslike the layout of a Manlicher Schoenauer. Based on usage for quick shots on dangerous game. 1. The bolt handle is too far forward and doesn't sit directly above the trigger. So when making a fast second shot you have to move you hand forward too much to operate the bolt. That doesn't mean with practice you can't find the bolt quickly but it is a poor design. With the bolt directly above the trigger you just raise you hand and you have the bolt. 2. The second problem is there is no round knob on the end of the bolt. Anyone who can operate a bolt action quickly places the round bolt knob in the palm of the hand. The knob is natural to lift the bolt and slide it in and out with the palm. There is no grasping the bolt with your fingers. Some might be able to palm a butterknife but it has always been awkward for me. 3. The split receiver makes the Manlicher hard to scope and get the scope low. If you do manage to get the scope any where close to low, the spit rear receiver makes you raise the bolt too close to the scope and makes it harder to operate quickly. You can see that my emphasis is on speed of operation. There is no doubt that the Mannlicher is slick operating but I will take a Mauser any day over the Mannlicher. I will say that the short barreled Mannlichers are sweet to carry on a sling. Are quick to shoulder and aim. They are well built and lots of people like them. Frank |
