Hi Harvey,
In the 50's the owner of the gun shop I worked at used M-S rifles for deer hunting. He and his wife packed into the high Sierras every year. They both used a 1903 6.5x54 Mannlichers. He also had a 1910 9.5x57. If I remember correctly, the 1903 guns weighed less than 6 pounds with 18" barrels. They didn't use scopes. When they weren't hunting the guns were in the store. I spent many an hour handling those guns in the store. I thought they were cool back then. The owner of the store had Hensoldt binoculars and scopes. The scopes had a vertical post with one horizontal cross wire. Wonderful stuff for a teenage kid. Oh boy, a 20ga S-56E. In about 1962/63 I was working in Elkhart, Indiana and there was a gun store there that had a bunch of Berretta 56E shotguns. I wanted a 20ga 56e so bad but never got one. Have wanted one all my life but it just never happened. Frank |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: >>>These two things plus the bolt being too far forward stopped me from owning one. The butterknife bolt handle was a real turn off.<<< I wholeheartedly agree with you on those counts. But iron sights ruled the day, along with some peep sights. so those were not too much of a problem in those days In their hey-day, 80 or so years ago, they were popular because of the spool magazine's reliability and light weight. I started with them 12 years or so, when Tom loaned me my first one to play with. He fancied my 20 ga. Beretta S-56E as a quail gun, and wanted a better bolt gun with scope to hunt in more open country. 4 years later, we finalized the deal and made the trade. I was hooked HGW |
