Section 15: Cleaning/Maintenance Subject: Rust Prevent Msg# 1105996

First, Barricade and Rust Prevent are not meant as lubricants, so using the right product is important. It is like using bologna instead of cheddar cheese when you are making macaroni and cheese. The "macaroni and bologna" version isn't going to score well in a macaroni and cheese test. So I toss the lubricant test for rust preventatives right out the door.
Unfortunately, modern shooters have come to expect single products to do multiple things well, the result of the rampant growth and use of CLPs (cleaner-lubricant-protectant). You know what they call a CLP? A jack of all trades...and master of NONE. I realize I'm going off on a rant here, but the best maintance products are those with a single use function--solvents for cleaning, lubricants for lubing, and rust preventatives for preventing rust.
We're not the military where a single product makes at least some sense for convenience, space consideration, and ease of use. Now then, how important is a multi-hour salt spray test score? I think we all need to determine that for ourselves. As a private citizen who keeps most of his guns wiped down and in a safe that sports a golden rod, which circulates slightly warmed air, I certainly don't need to same level of protection as someone whose guns spend each day exposed to salt air conditions. I like to throw a little logic into my buying decisions, as well as a little experience. I've been using Birchwood-Casey's Sheath/Barricade, along with Shooter's Choice's Rust Prevent, for a few decades now, and have never had my guns rust because of a low score in a salt spray test. For what it's worth, I wouldn't use WD-40 on a gun I was selling the next day. Evaporates too fast. No long term value. |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Hi Mark, I was just looking at the independent Comprehensive Corrosion test of 46 gun products. I posted the test results on the forum some time ago. The outstanding products for Corrosion Protection lasting 192 hours in a salt spray test were: Rust Prevent, WD 40 Specialist and Hornady One Shot. Barricade lasted for 48 hours so no where as good as the other three. The outstanding products for lowest Coefficient of Static Friction were: One Shot the lowest by a good margin. Barricade was second best. Rust Prevent wasn't even close to One Shot or Barricade. Rust Prevent was in the middle group of products. So Rust Prevent may not be as good for lubricating moving parts. I have use Hornady One Shot for a couple of years. It is a dry lube once the carrier evaporates and provides excellent Corrosion Protection. I haven't found anything about One Shot that I dislike. I guess it could be a little cheaper to buy. Frank |
