You choose your defensive rounds carefully. OTOH if you plan to hunt with it, that may be another story, but the political scene being what it is, guns, cartridges, and even indeed shooters are all at risk these days,
As for a defensive round, I go with 5.56 NATO 77Grain OTM Black Hills. It's a proven round and it's just dandily accurate in my AR-15. Yeah, I know you don't care for the 5.56 round, but for the round, it's pretty decent as far as 5.56 goes. I recently took that rifle out to a 500 yard range and from 2-400 it was ringing steel with every shot. At 500 yards, i think my Wolf / Tula ammo choice suffered a bit. I hit steel every third shot. |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: It's getting to be a crowded world for AR cartridges in the .243--.257--.264 caliber realm. Unless I was a dedicated handloader I don't think I'd go to the bank on the unpopular cartridges when it came to the AR. I very much was a fan of the .30 Remington AR cartridge when it appeared, but Remington, in their utter lack of foresight, marketed that cartridge as a hunting round, appealing to almost no one, when it would have been an awesome defensive cartridge. Remington ARs died, Remington died of coure, and the .30 AR died with them. Most people have never heard of it, like (if not worse than), the .25-45 Sharps. You choose your defensive rounds carefully.
