P.S. You wrote "back when they were legal here..." They are still legal here.  I think perhaps you meant back when they were still imported to this country?

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Back when they were legal here, I heard gunsmiths say the were great base guns to customize; metallurgy and dimensions were within mil-specs. Those early ones were brutally simple clones of the 1911A1 but they were solid! Of course, being made in China would give me pause but what can you buy that isn't made there these days!
