For shame, you exaggerate sir! At that time, USMC was around 175,000, pretty much what it is today. Rather than depend only on shore based elements to the Fleet Marine Force like we were, these days at least 2 MEUs (about 2200 Marines each) are deployed at sea at all times with another 5 MEUs "working up" for their next deployment. When the US invaded Lebanon in 1958, the initial landing was done by 1500 Marines, and the total US military force grew to about 15,000, including Army, Navy and Air Force. Harvey |
