My wife and I visited that ranch back in the late '70s and it was still a tourist attraction. The western town built on it was used for several movies, and part of the alamo set was still in place. I had no idea there was an Air Force base nearby. It would have been great fun to be an extra in that movie. | ||||||

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Stationed in Del Rio, they hired a bunch of us as Mexican soldiers, $10 a day plus food provided lunch and dinner. John Wayne was one hell of a nice guy, enjoyed spending time with us, had zero time for the Hollywood extras. The movie was filmed on Happy Shannahan's ranch in Bracketville, about 15 miles from the base. Not sure if it's still there but it was a tourist attraction for many years.
