Laughlin AFB, at that time was home to the 4080th Strategic Wing, SAC, and home of the famous U-2. Watch the "Dragon Lady" next time it's on the History Channel, it goes into the U-2 flights over Russia and the 10% of the story it tells is amazing. The 90% it doesn't tell would curl your hair! Ah, those were the days, my kids say they were what caused me to be me now!
FYI, Laughlin is considered the only "isolated" tour of duty in the Z.I., that's the Zone of the Interior meaning the lower 48 states. |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: My wife and I visited that ranch back in the late '70s and it was still a tourist attraction. The western town built on it was used for several movies, and part of the alamo set was still in place. I had no idea there was an Air Force base nearby. It would have been great fun to be an extra in that movie. |
