Stationed in Del Rio, they hired a bunch of us as Mexican soldiers, $10 a day plus food provided lunch and dinner. John Wayne was one hell of a nice guy, enjoyed spending time with us, had zero time for the Hollywood extras. The movie was filmed on Happy Shannahan's ranch in Bracketville, about 15 miles from the base. Not sure if it's still there but it was a tourist attraction for many years.
