That Ruger American is a nice package, but have you looked at the ballistics of that round.  That rifle comes with a 16.1" barrel.  Short barrel and low muzzle velocity doesn't make for a very efficient combination.  Of course, I don't know your application and it might be just what you want.

The Hornady SST 7.62x39 loading uses a 123gr bullet at a muzzle velocity of 2359ft/sec with a 20" barrel.  The muzzle energy is 1508 Ft Lbs.  By 100 yards the energy is down to 1136.  This is going to be a very short-range rifle for deer.

For comparison, the 7mm-08 has a 139gr load that starts out at 2950 with the SST bullet.  The 6.5 Creedmoor has a 129gr load with a 2950 muzzle velocity.  If you just got to have a 30cal then the 308 is hard to beat in a short action rifle.  

I know the 7.62x39 is popular but I don't understand why, especially for a hunting rifle.  When I go hunting, I want a flat shooting, long range rifle that will kill deer up to 300yds.
