I guess my first and most important question would be "In which of those alternative situations would the .45 snubby carry better than the higher-capacity 1911, or even the really higher capacity XD45?
I just think the gun is lacking in many areas. First, the effective barrel length - for comparison with a semi-auto - is about 3 3/4 to 4 inches, pretty short for a .45 and with a slight cylinder gap leak as well. I know you don't like a short-barreled 1911 that would equate to this (ignoring possible cycling reliability issues). Would you limit yourself to 185 gr ammo and maybe +P to offset that? The sight radius is about 4 inches - much shorter than a Commander or full-sized 1911. Don't you consider that a negative? Lastly, it weighs 28 ounces empty, not much different from a lightweight 1911 and heavier than an XD45 (I recognize that full ammo loads will change that some). Wouldn't that make for some noticeable sag in the alternate carry modes you mentioned? Stu |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: That revolver you pictured felt really good in the hand. I was also impressed with the light weight, easy-to-see sights, and business-like finish on these. They may not be the most practical thing in the world, but I believe the average "advanced gun guy," which describes most of this forum, looks at guns like this with the preconceived notion that an N-frame snub is simply impractical. However if we let ourselves think out of the "I'm an advanced gun guy and know it all" box for a minute, these are not as impractical as we proclaim. Consider alternative carry methods, proper holsters and clothing, and these make more sense. Cargoes are a good place to start for carry, and everyone is wearing them these days. But I could add hoodies with belly pockets, jacket and car coat pockets, etc. There are some quality holster makers offering N-frame pocket holsters, and not just for these snubs, but up to 4" N-frames as well. And they are selling them, so think about that, ya skeptics. Add good, quick defensive sights, tuned actions, and, for those willing to practice, fair shootability--a combination of large grip that a man-sized hand does well with and a light frame that is probably better with .45ACP than a Magnum (Allan). Top it off with an embarrassment of riches, defensive ammo-wise, loads that you can choose for the barrel length and accuracy in your gun, and you've got something kind of special. Not exactly a World's Tallest Midget. |
